Lucas Robotics Blog Entry #2 Robotic Types

Industrial Robots:
In the modern industrial world robots are the true marvel behind is all. A robot the size of a person can easily carry a load over 45 Kilograms and move it very quickly with a repeatability of +/-0.006 inches. Fortunately these bodies are robots which allow its work time to be active all day for years to come. Though they are reprogrammable, in many applications (particularly those in the auto industry) they can be programmed to repeat the same action time and time again.
Mobile Robots:
Mobile robots stand in for people in a number of ways. Some are used in space explorations and used to explore other planets. they are also used inhospitable areas on Earth, collecting geological samples. Others seek out landmines in former battlefields. Mobile robots are also used by the police to search of diffuse bombs, or even to apprehend a suspect.
Mobile robots also work in homes and businesses. Hospitals may use robots to transport medications. Some museums use robots to patrol their galleries at night, monitoring air quality and humidity levels. Several companies have developed robotic vacuums.

Educational Robots:
In schools, educational robots are used to help students grasp concepts in technology, engineering, math and science, using hands-on building sets, programming software, and activity materials that adhere to the curriculum. The LEGO company, for instance, collaborated with MIT Media Lab in 1986 to produce the first LEGO based educational products for use by elementary students and teachers. In 1998, LEGO® MINDSTORMS® for Schools (LMfS) and ROBOLAB™ were launched. Their programmable robotics kit is regularly updated for release, with features like advanced color sensors and other upgraded capabilities.

Domestic Robots:
Many domestic robots are used for basic household chores like vaccuuming, the SLAM based neato Robotics vaccuum is one of those. Others are educational or entertainment robots, such as the HERO or the AIBO. While most domestic robots are simplistic, some are connected to WiFi home networks or smart environments and are autonomous to a high degree.
