The Mars Exploration Rover Mission (MER) was commisioned by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 2003. It is an ongoing robotic mission. This involves two robotic rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, exploring the surface of the planet mars. This mission's objective was to locate and characterize a broad range of soil and rocks to unfold clues as to the pas water activity on Mars. This mission is the successor of two earlier explorations; the two Viking program landers in 1976 and Mars Pathfinder probe in 1997.
